Viva Voce Examination

The definition of viva voce examination is an exam by word of mouth instead of writing and postgraduate student defend his/her thesis in verbal.

During the viva examination, a student will demonstrate the ability to participate in academic discussion with research colleagues.

The viva voce is the final assessment of the thesis, the research and the student. It is certainly one of the few opportunities for the student to present their thesis in front of the internal examiner, external examiner, and chairman committee.

The main purpose of viva voce are:

  • To confirm whether the student understands what have written and can defend it verbally.
  • To investigate student's awareness of where their original work sits in relation to the wider research field.
  • To establish whether the thesis is of a sufficiently high standard to merit the award of the degree for which it is submitted.
  • To allow the student to clarify and develop the written thesis in response to the examiners' questions.
