1.  FULL ADMISSION: Applicant who meet one of the following:-

1. 550 for the TOEFL Paper-based Test (Academic Version); or
2. Band 6.0 for IELTS (Academic Training) ; or
3. 79-80 for TOEFL Internet-based Test (Academic Version); or
4. 213 for TOEFL Computer-based Test (Academic Version); or
5. Level 109 for CIEP at ELS Language Centre; or
6. Band 4.0 for IELTS (Academic Training) or 400 for the TOEFL Paper-based Test (Academic Version) only for Malay Language Studies, Arabic, Chinese Literature programme or any other programmes that allow a thesis to be written in the language of instruction.
7. Applicant who has graduated from Public or Private Institute  in Malaysia which is recognized by MQA; or
8. Applicant who has undergone his Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree from Institute of Higher Learning in Native English Speaking Countries; or
9. Applicant from any of the following native English Speaking Country and Commonwealth countries:

The validity period of TOEFL (Academic Version)/IELTS (Academic Version) should not be more than five (5) years.

2.  PROVISIONAL ADMISSION: Applicant who meet one of the following:-

1. 500-549 for the TOEFL Paper-based Test (Academic Version);  or
2. 173 for TOEFL Computer - based; or
3. 61 for TOEFL Internet – based; or
4. Band 5.5 for IELTS (Academic Training); or
5. Level 107 and 108 of CIEP at ELS Language Centre;
    

     And must register and pass the Tertiary English Programme (TEP) offered by Faculty of Modern Languages and
     Communication

3.  EXEMPTION: Applicant who meet one of the following may be exempted  from English Language Requirement:-

a.       Master

• Applicant who has undergone his Bachelor’s degree in English Language is subject to recommendation by advisor/supervisor/programme coordinator. Please furnish all the following documents to your advisor/supervisor /programme coordinator along with the application form:

1. Letter of support from university(Bachelor’s degree); and
2. Certification letter from Ministry of Higher Education/Cultural Attaché.

b.      PhD

• Applicant who has undergone his Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree in English Language is subject to recommendation by advisor/supervisor /programme coordinator. Please furnish all the following documents to your advisor/supervisor /programme coordinator along with the application form:

1. 1. Letter of support from university(Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree); and
   2. Certification letter from Ministry of Higher Education/Cultural Attaché.

4.  NON-GRADUATING: An applicant who:-

 a.      Obtain below than:-

• 500-549 for the TOEFL Paper-based Test (Academic Version);  or
• Level 107 and 108 of CIEP at ELS Language Centre; or
• 173 for TOEFL Computer - based; or
• 61 for TOEFL Internet – based; or
• Band 5.5 for IELTS (Academic Training); or
• Level 107 of CIEP at ELS Language Centre;

b.     Face difficulties in taking either the TOEFL or IELTS test in own country, may apply to join our Non-Graduating Programme for a period of 6 months (one semester). It is important to note that during the Non-Graduating Programme period, you are not allowed to any academic courses apart from English Courses. Fees for the Non-Graduating Programme (to be paid at the School of Graduate Studies upon registration) are follow:-

        c.      English Courses:

i.   INTENSIVE ENGLISH PROGRAMME (IEP):

a.  Applicant who meet one of the following:-

• 450-499 for TOEFL Paper-based test; or
• Band 4.0-4.5 for IELTS (Academic Version); or
• CEFR B1 (Threshold Intermediate Level) in an alternative standardised test; or equivalent

b.  Applicants meeting the above requirements may enrol in an Intensive English Programme (IEP) offered by CALC (Centre for the Advancement of English Competence) UPM. The IEP is a  pre-sessional 12-week programme conducted between October and January, prior to the start of the February semester. Those who wish to enrol in the programme are required to register as a Non-Graduating student of UPM.

c.  At the end of the IEP, they will need to sit for a recommended standardised test. IEP students who achieve a score equivalent to 550 on the TOEFL Paper-based test may enrol in a regular academic programme. Students who achieve a score of 500 - 549 may enrol in a regular academic programme on condition they also enrol in and pass a set of Tertiary English Programme courses offered by the Faculty of Modern Languages and Communication (NOTE: OR REFER THEM TO AN EXISTING CLAUSE FOR SUCH STUDENTS). Students who attain a score less than 500 will need to repeat the IEP if they still wish to apply for admission into a UPM postgraduate programme.

ii. CERTIFIED INTENSIVE ENGLISH PROGRAMME (CIEP)

• A score of 110 will allow you Full Admission;
• A score of 108 and 109 will enable you a Provisional Admission status which will allow you to enroll in the TEP or CIEP programme, depending on your preference. You may also sit for the IELTS or TOEFL test on your own.
• If you obtain a score of level below 108, you may enroll in the Certified Intensive English Programme (CIEP), manage by UPM Education & Training (UPMET). Click here for details and fees of Certified Intensive English Programme. You may also study English with other providers to prepare you to sit for IELTS or TOEFL test on your own.
