The field of marine biology is essential in understanding marine life including all flora and fauna, and their interactions with biotic and abiotic factors. Systematics, taxonomy and population genetics, using both conventional and molecular methods are important in assessing biodiversity, community structures, and their responses and/or adaptations to environmental and climate changes. In addition, influences of physical and chemical factors on the marine nutrient cycle, energy flow and ecosystem productivity are important to determine the ecosystem stability and resilience. The study of marine biology is often carried out in conjunction with other fields such as biological oceanography, cell biology, chemistry, ecology, geology, molecular biology, zoology, marine conservation biology, and fisheries biology in order to unravel the complex functions and processes in marine ecosystems. Advanced knowledge and information from marine biology research can contribute significantly to various related fields such as fisheries science, aquaculture, medical science and marine engineering.
