University of Alberta, Canada and UPM to Offer Dual PhD

On the 25^th of March 2015, a professor from University of Alberta, Canada namely Professor Dr. G. Arturo Sanchez-Azofeifa had visited SGS, UPM. His visit was welcomed by Professor Bujang Kim Huat, the Dean of School of Graduate Studies and Professor Dr. Hj. Mohd Basyaruddin Abdul Rahman, from the Faculty of Science, UPM.

The meeting was held as both universities had planned to offer the Dual PhD programme starting from First Semester 2015/2016. It is anticipated that a Memorandum of Agreement will be signed by the Vice Chancellor of both universities at the end of April 2015. Under this programme, UPM PhD students would have an opportunity to study at the University of Alberta for a minimum of 6 months. At the end of the programme the student will be given a dual degree certificates from both universities. Among the area of collaborations are agriculture, science, bio-medical, medical, dentistry, engineering, computer science, economics, education, language and communication, and technology. The programme will be the first collaboration between UPM and a university from Canada. As a result this is the 17^th collaboration programme for UPM in total. QS World University Ranking 2014/2015 has ranked University of Alberta as the 84^th top university in the world.

According to Professor Sanchez, UPM’s student who is enrolled under this programme will not be charged with any fees when they go to University of Alberta. On the same note, Professor Bujang said that UPM collaboration programme is supported by the Ministry of Education of Malaysia and students who are recipients of MyPhD scholarship should grab this opportunity since this programme is sufficiently funded by the ministry to support their studies.
