Brisbane, 30 September 2016 - UPM was among the three Malaysian universities invited to participate in the 2016 Asia-Pacific Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Semi-Final, held here today. The 2016 Asia-Pacific 3MT was held for the first time at the University of Queensland (UQ), with participation from universities from Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, and Malaysia. Malaysia was represented by UPM, USM and UTM.
The 3MT, founded by the University of Queensland, is a competition which requires students to present their research to a lay audience in just three minutes. It was invented at UQ in 2008 by Emeritus Professor Alan Lawson, who conceived the idea during Queensland’s drought, when most showers had a three minute timer. Since its conception, 3MT has expanded to more than 350 institutions across six continents. The inaugural Asia-Pacific 3MT, sponsored by Springer Nature, saw participation from six countries and every Australian state or territory.
UPM was represented by Tan Niu Jin, a PhD student with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, who received a sponsorship of AUD500 for registration to participate in the competition. Niu Jin was the winner of UPM’s 2015 3MT and the winner of UKM’s Bicara Tuntas 2016, and presented at the Asia-Pacific 3MT with the title “Going the Whole Nine Yards: Preventing Preterm Babies”. Her research focuses on creating a toolkit for the early detection of premature births.
Niu Jin was glad to have had the experience to represent Malaysia and UPM at the Asia-Pacific 3MT. “Although I didn’t win this time, the opportunity to present my research at an international stage is one that I will always treasure,” she said.
The winner of the 2016 Asia-Pacific 3MT was Joshua Chu-Tan from Australian National University, with his presentation entitled “Targeting the Root of Vision Loss”. Joshua walked away with the prize of AUD5,000 of research travel grant.
