UPM-SGS Leads Impact Study of MyBrain15

By Noritah Omar

UPM’s School of Graduate Studies (SGS) is leading a nation-wide impact study on MyBrain15.  MyBrain15, an initiative by the Ministry of Higher Education, is a sponsorship programme which provides scholarship for Malaysian postgraduate students at PhD and Master’s levels.

The programme was started in 2011 under the National Higher Education Strategic Plan, with the aim of increasing Malaysia’s pool of professional human resource.  By generating a talent base of knowledgeable workforce, the programme will ultimately help spur the country’s growth in research, development and innovation, and lead Malaysia into becoming a high income First World nation.

The programme is now in its fifth year of implementation, and the Ministry has formed a taskforce committee to evaluate the impact and effectiveness of the programme. The committee comprises of deans and deputy deans of graduate schools from four universities, and two representatives from the Ministry.

According to the head of the committee, Prof. Dr. Bujang B.K. Huat, “the committee will focus especially on the procedures and implementation process of the programme, and issues such as GOT (graduate on time)”.

“We will also make necessary recommendations in line with the programme’s objectives, and in view of optimising the cost spent by the Ministry”, he explained further.

Members of the taskforce committee are: Prof. Dr. Zaidatun Tasir (Dean, SGS UTM), Prof. Dr. Andanastuti Muchtar (Dean, Graduate Centre UKM), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohd. Fadzil Hassan (Dean, Centre for Graduate Studies UTP), Prof. Dr. Ishak Ahmad (Deputy Dean, Graduate Centre UKM), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aminah Md. Yusof (Academic Manager, SGS UTM), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Noritah Omar (Deputy Dean, SGS UPM), Ms. Juliza Mohamad Jamil (Ministry of Higher Education) and Ms. Mariani Mohd. Refin (Ministry of Higher Education).

The report is expected to be completed in early April of 2016.
